This illustration above shows how screening with the ASQ and ASQ:SE fits into a system to help identify children with potential developmental delays. The process starts at the top by screening all children, and then children fall into 3 categories:
Children who fall below the cutoff should be immediately referred to the appropriate community resource agency for further evaluation. Children ages zero up until their third birthday should be referred to Early Intervention Colorado. Children who have had their third birthday should be immediately referred to Child Find. Access the steps in the referral process by clicking here.
Children who fall near the cutoffs should be referred to the appropriate community agency for further evaluation or monitored closely.
Children who are not near cutoffs are exactly where they are expected to be for children of their age. Parents should be encouraged to continue looking for expected developmental milestones and practicing age-appropriate skills with their children. Children who are not near the cutoffs are also monitored. In some programs (e.g., Early Head Start), children may also be assessed with a curriculum-based assessment tool to determine potential goals.
Important Point! Note that children who are eligible for services are usually no longer screened. These children may be assessed with a curriculum-based assessment to determine functional goals to work on-but at this point the screening tool is not needed anymore (and in most cases would be inappropriate to continue using!)
Complete scoring instructions for the M-CHAT can be found at www.mchatscreen.com.
A child fails on M-CHAT when 2 or more critical items are failed or when any 3 items are failed. The critical items are numbers 2, 7, 9, 13, 14, and 15.
In general failed items should be followed up with the follow-up interview which is also available on the website (www.mchatscreen.com). Not all children who fail the M-CHAT will meet criteria for an ASD diagnosis, however, children who fail the M-CHAT should be referred for an Autism Diagnostic Evaluation in addition to being referred to Early Intervention Colorado or Child Find.
